1 cup of black walnut meats 1/2 cup of shortening 2 cups of brown sugar 3 eggs, separated 3 cups of flour 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves 1 teaspoon of baking powder 3/4 cup of milk
Place nutmeats in boiling water for a few minutes, then drain. Cream shortening and add sugar. Add well beaten egg yolks. Sift together dry ingredients and add alternately with milk to the creamed mixture. Add nutmeats. Fold in well beaten egg whites. Bake in three layers at 350ºF. until done.
